UEFA Champions League

7 Players that increased their chances of winning the Balon D'or this past week.

It's no news that the Balon D'or list has been released. As it has been, 30 names will be released first. Then the top 5 will be picked out and out of that 5, one of them will take home the golden gong.

This past week, many players on the previously released list played matches on international duty and some of them impressed. Let's look at them.

1. Nicolo Barella

The Italian earned his place on the top 30 after his wonderful performance in the midfield both for club and country. He was voted the best midfielder in Italian Serie A and he was a driving force for Italy in their conquest for Euro 2020. However, against Spain in the Semifinals of the UEFA Nations League, he wasn't at his best. But he made up for that with a wonderful performance against Belgium in the 3rd place match, scoring a wonderful volley for the European Champions.

2. Jorginho

Jorginho is a favorite to win the award this year. He won the UEFA Champions League, EURO 2020 and the UEFA Super Cup. He was one of Chelsea's best players and was very instrumental for Italy. Well, not everyday is Christmas and that was proven in Italy's match against Spain last Wednesday. He didn't play badly but he couldn't help his team out of trouble. But yesterday, even though he came as a substitute, he showed why he is the current best midfielder in the world.

3. Lautaro Martinez

Many people underrated the Argentine striker. But he was one of the key factors in Inter Milan winning Serie A last season and he helped Argentina win the Copa America. He has also had a wonderful start to the season for his club. And he did so for his country after scoring a goal against Uruguay yesterday.

4. Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi will always be a favorite for the Balon D'or. His wonderful performances last season speaks volumes. And though his club performances this season is not up to par according to his standards, his national performances keeps turning heads as he ran the show that won Uruguay yesterday, also scoring one goal.

5. Kylian Mbappe

Kylian has fought his way to being one of the top 5. He had a wonderful season for PSG, ending as their highest goal scorer. He had a tournament to forget in Euro 2020 but has redeemed himself in the Nations League. He was one of the League's top players and he showed it in the Semifinals and finals of the competition, scoring 2 goals and giving 2 assists.

6. Karim Benzema

Benzema's return to the Champions League has been a dream return. Though France played woefully in Euro 2020, he was by far their star player. And yet again, he proved why he is one of the top strikers in the world scoring 2 goals in the Semifinals and finals of the Nations League to guide France to Victory.
