Lacazette scores four times to motivate Lyon and overtake Mbappe.

Lyon overcame a three-goal deficit to defeat Montpellier 5-4 in Ligue 1 on Saturday, as Alexandre Lacazette scored his fourth goal from the penalty spot with the game's final kick.

With 24 goals in his first season back in Ligue 1, the former Arsenal forward has surpassed Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain.

The former Arsenal forward now leads the scoring chart by one goal.

For the visitors, who led 4-1 after 55 minutes in a remarkable contest, Elye Wahi also scored four goals.

When the clubs above them, Lille and Rennes, slipped the day before, Lyon took advantage of it to move into the European picture.

After spending five years with Arsenal, the 31-year-old Lacazette returned to Lyon last summer and handed the home team the lead right away.

Montpellier won, though, as a result of Lyon's 15 minutes of shoddy defense.

Wahi took advantage of two errors made by midfielder Johann Lepenant in the space of a minute and a foul committed by Dejan Lovren that led to a penalty before taking a second opportunity to chip the ball over goalkeeper Anthony Lopes and proceed to score, giving Montpellier a 4-1 lead.

In the 59th minute, Lacazette started the comeback by scoring off a ball from Bradley Barcola.

Headers off of Barcola crosses were scored by Lovren and Lacazette in the 70th and 82nd minutes, respectively.

Lyon's final opportunity appeared to have been lost nine minutes into extra time when Barcola soared over.

Referee Clement Turpin assessed the sequence of events after the time limit had expired and determined that Christopher Jullien had wrestled Lacazette to the ground.

To complete the comeback, the striker blasted the penalty goal.

The game, according to Lopes, "sums up our season." We placed ourselves in difficulties, but we are fortunate to have an exceptional player in Alexandre.

The outcome put Lyon three points behind Lille, who is currently in fifth place and qualified for the Europa League.
