Villarreal vs. Barcelona - Can The Yellow Submarines Halt Barca?

Villarreal are set to play host to Catalan giants Barcelona on Sunday in one the star attractions of the weekend fixtures, with the seventh placed side locking horns against the Nou Camp based side with slim La Liga title hopes this term.

The Yellow Submarines are coming off a 2-1 loss to Deportivo Alaves in their previous La Liga fixture. They went behind early in the contest before Paco Alcacer struck an equaliser after the restart, but they were unable to hold on and conceded the winner 10 minutes from time.

Unai Emery’s tutored side has struggled to find a balance between their domestic and continental campaigns and sit on seventh position on the log, the final Europa League qualification spot. They have a big semi-final against Arsenal next week and their attention is likely to be divided on the big cherry ahead.

Villarreal have been surprisingly poor at home lately, claiming just two victories from their last 10 La Liga fixtures at the Estadio de la Ceramica fortress. They have lost three of the last four fixtures in that run and were beaten 2-1 by lightweight Osasuna in their previous outing at home.

Barcelona have played one game fewer than their title rivals and they now have their own fate in their hands. The Ronald Koeman tutored side has earned 43 points in the 2021 window.

Barcelona was prolific in their previous La Liga fixture as they whitewashed Getafe with a comfortable 5-2 win. Argentine talisman Lionel Messi netted a brace, with Ronald Araujo and Antoine Griezmann on target as well, while they also benefitted from an own goal from Getafe defender Sofian Chakla.

Match Prediction

Villarreal (2-1) Barcelona

On paper Barcelona have the edge in this fixture, claiming 27 wins from the previous 45 meetings. Football is not mathematics and the Yellow Submarines can upturn the cart on Sunday evening.
