Retired Air Commodore Abayomi Balogun gives interesting insight on engagement of 'mercenaries'

A security expert and war veteran Retired Air Commodore Abayomi Balogun was a guest on Arise News program ‘morning show’ on Saturday. The bulk of the discussion was centered upon the question of the engagement of mercenaries in the war against terrorists in the North East. Recall that in the aftermath of the killings of over 40 farmers in Borno state, the state governor requested for the engagement of mercenaries to help prosecute the war against the insurgency.

Rt. Air Cmdr Abayomi Balogon began by stating that a lot of people misunderstand the whole picture when it comes to mercenaries. He said, ‘’mercenaries are simply people you engage to do what you cannot do. It had a bad name before. They are now referred to as private contractors; you reward them to do what you cannot do.’’

He said that the use of merceneries should not be seen as a sign of weakness, according to him, ‘’the US engaged private contractors in Iraq and we have also used mercenaries in ECOMOG.’’

Speaking on Governor Zulum's call for the engagement of mercenaries, he said that, ‘’the governor was there when mercenaries were engaged before in the war against Boko Haram and we were winning until we failed to plan for their further engagement."
