Arsenal have, completed the signing of young defender Jonathan Dinzeyi. The 20-year-old defender has played for Spurs youth, sides but was released by them recently.
Arsenal have been aiming to bring in young players to their academy. Edu and Per Mertesacker have decided to strengthen their academy U-23s squad as many of the academy players are in the first-team regularly. And in that process, the Gunners have signed Jonathan Dinzeyi, who is a promising center-back.
Capped by England at under-18s level, Dinzeyi made his first start for Tottenham’s senior team in a pre-season friendly against Girona in 2018, but didn’t ever feature for the senior team in any competitive match. With Matt Smith and Zech Medley already confirmed to be heading out on loan, there is a need to strengthen Steve Bould’s under-23 side. And Dinzeyi will be going straight to the reserves squad, who are already in training at the London Colney.
In 2019-20, Dinzey made six appearances for Tottenham’s under-23s. In February, he went for a trial with QPR, playing and scoring for their under-23s in a win over Coventry City. But he decided to stay with Spurs but now have been released following the expiration of his contract in June.
Dinzeyi will be hoping, to break out in the Arsenal senior squad
The lanky defender started, off as a winger but settled down at the center of defense. He previously has stated that he idolizes Jan Vertonghen as a player. “I’ve been watching him a lot, even before he came to Tottenham, and I quickly realized that he’s very good on the ball when he steps out from the back,” Dinzeyi said three years ago.
Given the rivalry and the, bitterness that Tottenham and Arsenal have between themselves, it is not often that the players of either clubs switch to their rivals. Hence, eyes will be on Dinzeyi regarding his progress at the Gunners.
He will be joined, by George Lewis and Tim Akinola who also, have been couped by Arsenal recently.
