UEFA Champions League

2 Matches From Yesterday That Showed Why Football Needs The "European Super League" Which Many Are Against

As another round of European club football leagues are being played this weekend, there were two matches that were played yesterday, Saturday, 18th September 2021, in the Dutch Eredivisie and in the German Bundesliga that showed that the level of competition in some of the these leagues are terrible.

Bayern Munich played host to newly promoted Bochum in the Bundesliga and the result of that game is nothing short of an embarrassment. 7-0 Bayern thrashed them.

If you think that was too much, wait till you hear the next one.

Ajax Amsterdam of the Netherlands were also at home as they welcomed Cambur. They however, did not treat their visitors with any form of respect or decency as they walloped them 9-0.These two results are why the idea of a European Super League was even proposed in the first place. As I watched these two matches yesterday, I was sad for football because the game should be a competition between two teams and not one team doing target practice against a whole team in a so called competitive league match.

The European Super League (ESL), is a proposed annual club football competition that would be contested by twenty European football clubs, although only twelve clubs joined it. It is organised by the European Super League Company, S.L., a commercial enterprise created to rival the UEFA Champions League, Europe's premier club football tournament organised by UEFA.

Many people, fans, pundits, ex players, current players, were all completely against this idea and even though I can understand why, the fact that we have to see the kind of results that we saw yesterday is also not good for football.

Inter Milan also beat Bologna 6-1 in a Seria A match yesterday to add to the mess.

I think that although the Super League won't be welcomed or implemented, this is why football maybe needs it.

Having the elite clubs in Europe face each other in the same league. This way we can avoid seeing such embarrassing scoreline like the ones from yesterday.
