African Footballer Of The Year Award : Osimhen Can End Nigeria's 20 Years Drought

Victor Osimhen scored for Napoli in their 2-0 win over Cagliari at the Diego Armando Stadium on Sunday.

The Nigerian striker found the back of the net inside the opening 11 minutes.

Osimhen won a penalty in the second half, and Captain Lorenzo Insigne stepped up to convert from the spot and sealed the win.

The three points means Napoli maintained their perfect start to the season with six wins from six games, and they are currently on top of the table.

Osimhen has now scored six goals for Napoli in all competitions this season, with four of them coming in the domestic league.

Before he was substituted against Cagliari, Osimhen completed 2 successful dribbles, 5 ground duels, 3 aerial duels, 2 shots on target, and he also managed 31 touches, the most of any player on the pitch.

Finally, Napoli are properly becoming Osimhen's team, and he could just be the one to end their 31-year title drought.

In addition, Osimhen's performance means, Nigeria can now safely boost of a mega star in European football, who is capable of challenging for both team and individual awards.

Nigeria has not produced an African footballer of the year winner, since Kanu Nwankwo last won in 1999 and Osimhen could just be the man to end the wait as well.

Victor Osimhen is not new to winning individual accolades, he won FIFA U17 World Cup golden boot and CAF young player of the year award in 2015. In 2020, he Marc-Vivien Foe award for the best African player in France's Ligue 1, but winning the main award remains a dream for the striker.

Liverpool duo of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have won the award in the last three years, but Osimhen can get into the conversation, if he sustained his level.

Osimhen will have to end 2021 in spectacular fashion to push these big guys all the way, but finishing in the top seven will be a massive achievement for him.

However, Osimhen could mount a serious challenge for the prestigious award in 2022 because there will be many competitions to play.

Should Osimhen fire Napoli winning to the title next year and then help Nigeria perform well at the 2022 African Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup, then he might just be a major contender.
