Chelsea will host Southampton on matchday seven of the 2021/2022 English Premier League season on Saturday, 02 October 2021.
The blues will hope to bounce back to winning ways after suffering back-to-back defeats at the hands of Manchester City and Juventus respectively. They have also struggled to register just one shot on target in those two games.
Southampton on the other end will be hoping to secure their first three points when they travel to the London club after a run of games without a win.
Having said that let's quickly have a look at everything we need to know ahead of this meeting scheduled for 3:00 PM West African Time.
- Key Players Statistics
Chelsea completed the signing of Romelu Lukaku for a reported fee of about £97.5m in a five-year deal during the summer transfer window. The attacker has already scored four goals for the club since his arrival.
Although he has gone on to play four matches now without scoring but against Saints, he could come out with a goal. Southampton free-kick specialist Ward Prowse will be on the end of a dead ball situation to cause havoc to the Chelsea team.
The blue side must avoid any free-kick close to the edge of the box as he has a high conversion rate at a set-piece.
- Injury Updates
Chelsea will again be without Mason Mount, Reece James, Christian Pulisic, and N'Golo Kanté who are all first-team players and will be unavailable for their meeting against Southampton.
N'Golo Kanté is unavailable as a result of testing positive to COVID-19 while the others are out due to injuries. Southampton has fewer injury worries as their major worry is the ineligibility of Armando Broja for the game as a result of Chelsea been his parent club.
Chelsea has always had the lion's share when it comes to this fixture as they have recorded 24 wins, drawn 11, and lost 9 of their games against Southampton. Their last meeting at Stamford Bridge ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw after the blues gave away a two-goal lead in the match.
- Form Guide
Chelsea is currently in the third position of the English Premier League table with 13 points after recording four wins, a draw and a loss in their six matches played.
They have lost only once at home this season which was against Manchester City. Southampton is occupying the 16th position on the table with 4 points after playing six games with four draws and two losses.
They did put up a good performance against Manchester City last weekend at the Etihad Stadium with the scores ending in a stalemate.
The Referee in charge of this meeting is none other than Martin Atkinson and will be joined by Mike Dean as the Video Assistant Referee.
Chelsea should win this meeting by 3-1 as they wouldn't want to lose three games in a row.
