Some say they are aliens. Others describe them as gods of football. This is an appreciation post for two of the most popular sport personalities in the world and the best footballers to have graced our planet in recent time. Maybe it is high time we stopped the twitter polls pitting Messi against Ronaldo and just appreciate the uniqueness and extraordinary feats of these two colossi of modern day football.
The stats speak for themselves. Messi and Ronaldo have each won up to thirty team trophies in their footballing careers to date. Messi has won with Barcelona and Argentina while Ronaldo has won with Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Portugal. These men are proven serial winners. They completely dominated the Ballon d'or awards for an entire decade from 2008 through 2018.
In their prime no other player could come close. They scored goals like it was a crime not to. Even now in their thirties, they are still head and shoulders above the rest of the bunch. Every 'next rated' player since their emergence has only gone on to end up in their shadows. How they have remained consistent with their performances on the pitch for almost two decades of actively playing football more than qualifies for a PhD thesis.
Messi and Ronaldo are not just awe-inspiring footballers. They are institutions. What they have done over the years is truly remarkable. Their records are incredible. It may take a long while before we witness any other player match or even break the records they have set. And they will be the benchmark.
Here's to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo - a toast to greatness!!!
