UEFA Champions League

One Ronaldo's record Messi could have broken had he taken PSG last penalty yesterday.

The Argentina captain and his new club, Paris Saint Germain, were in action in the UEFA Champions League yesterday against German club, Red Bull Leipzig. After drawing their first game of the new UCL campaign against Club Brugge, Lionel Messi and PSG have picked up maximum points against strong opponents in Manchester City and Red Bull Leipzig.

Like he did against City, Lionel Messi made the difference again in yesterday's encounter by scoring two goals, the first a tap in from a yard out after seen his initial shot tipped to the bar by the goalkeeper, before converting a panenka penalty in for his second goal and PSG'S third for the night. He had the opportunity of completing a hat trick late in the game, only for him to give the ball to Kylian Mbappé to take, a chance the young Frenchman wasted. Having been a direct rival of Cristiano Ronaldo, we will look at one opportunity to beat Ronaldo that Messi passed on last night by giving out the late spot kick to Mbappé.

Lionel Messi has proven again that he is generous and that he cares about his teammates. What he did last night is something he has been doing all his career. Instead of going away with the match ball, he chose to hand over the opportunity to his teammates, something he has done on 30 occasions before in his career and on 11 occasions when he is on the verge of completing a hat trick.

Before yesterday's encounter, Messi is second to Ronaldo on the list of Champions League all-time top scorer but was tied with him in terms of most hat tricks scored in the history of the competition with eight UCL career hat trick each, however, instead of going for his third for the night and passed the Portuguese forward's record, Messi chose to stay level with him by allowing Mbappé to take the spot kick. Had he taken the penalty and scored, he would have recorded his ninth UCL hat trick which would have seen him broke Ronaldo's record of eight UCL hat trick.
