CAF Confed Cup: Enyimba risks elimination

Enyimba are at the risk of being eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup ahead of Wednesday night’s must-win clash against table-toppers, Orlando Pirates.

Having failed to do the needful in the away tie in Benghazi, the Peoples Elephant are left with no other option other than beating Pirates if they are to stand any chance of continuing in the second-tier continental club tournament.

Unfortunately, victory for Enyimba in Aba does not even fully guarantee them a place in the quarter-finals and so they must keep an eye on the other group game between ES Setif of Algeria and Ahli Benghazi of Libya.

While Pirates appear safe with 9 points from 5 games, Ahli are in good stead with their seven points, Enyimba and ES Setif who are third and fourth respectively with six and five points also have a slim chance of progression.

Should Ahly Benghazi beat Setif in the away duel, Enyimba’s campaign in the Confederation Cup will be effectively over and the wait for a Nigerian club to win this competition automatically continues.

Enyimba’s other path to the quarter-final would then be; beating the Pirates as much as 4-0 to overtake them in goals difference advantage.

In their last five games, the Pirates have conceded just one goal, so it is yet to be seen how they would ship in four, five goals in Aba within 90 minutes.
