How Edouard Mendy's Performance At Chelsea Could Help More African Goalkeepers To Play In EPL

The performance of Edouard Mendy at Chelsea has been outstanding, he has established himself as the main goalkeeper of the Blues. His display on the field could open a door of opportunities for several talented goalkeepers from the continent of Africa to play in the English Premier League.

Mendy is the first African goalkeeper to win the UEFA Champions League and he has been nominated for the Yashin trophy, this can be taken as proof of how good he is as a goalkeeper.

While several footballers from Africa have gone to established themselves at the English Premier League, it has been tough for African goalkeepers to achieve the same feat.

It takes hard work and luck for a youngster to make it as a professional in Africa, there is a need for more funding to create a system that can harness the potentials available in the continent.

The story of how Edouard Mendy made it to the top indicates how hard it could be for African goalkeepers. He started his career in France but had no job at a period. His persistency and determination kept him working towards his dream. He later played for Reims in Ligue 1 during the 2018/2019 season where he had fourteen clean sheets.

His performance for Reims convinced Rennes to sign him up where he played an important role to qualify the team for UEFA Champions League.

His breakthrough came when Chelsea legend, Petr Čech recommended him to the Blues. He was signed up for £22 million.

Edouard Mendy has adapted his game to the English Premier League, he is physically strong in the box and has a decent kicking ability.

Some African Goalkeepers had played in the EPL years ago, Bruce David Grobbelaar of Zimbabwe had played as a goalkeeper for Liverpool. However, the rise of Mendy at top clubs like Chelsea could convince several clubs in EPL to give African goalkeepers opportunities to play for their teams.
