Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest goalscorer in the history of the UEFA Champions League judging by the number of goals he has scored in the competition in his career. At 38, the Portuguese superstar plies his trade in the Saudi Arabia Professional League with Al-Nassr.
The former Manchester United star has scored 140 goals in the Champions League with only Lionel Messi coming close to the five-time Ballon d'Or award winner with 129 goals in the competition.
However, Cristiano Ronaldo's record is under threat but Lionel Messi isn't the vocal point of this threat. This threat is in the form of two of the biggest stars in football currently, namely Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.
Both stars have been scoring goals for fun in the past few years and with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo approaching the end of their careers, Mbappe and Haaland are getting set to take over the mantle.
Erling Haaland scored five goals in Manchester City's 7-0 win against RB Leipzig in midweek, taking his tally of goals in the Champions League to 33 goals. He is just 22 years, meaning that he still has a lot of years to play top-level football.
If Haaland continues scoring goals at this rate, it is just a matter of time before he breaks Cristiano Ronaldo's Champions League goals record.
Kylian Mbappe can also break Cristiano Ronaldo's Champions League goals record. The 24-year-old has scored 40 goals in the Champions League so far, meaning that he has 100 more goals to go in order to break the record.
The Paris Saint-Germain star is yet to reach the peak of his powers; that is how scarily good he is, and this means that if he manages to continue playing and scoring goals at the topmost level till he is 30, he could break his idol's record.
