NIG vs CPV: In The Absence Of The "Oyibo Wall" Look How Rohr Should Set Up Nigeria's Defence

Nigeria's world cup qualifying campaign might take a hit as they travel to Cape Verde, the super eagles have been rocked with the early exit of eight UK based players. The players had to travel early due to strict covid-19 regulations in the UK which demands that anyone entering the country will have to be isolated for five days, so the players were excused to enable them isolate ahead of the Premier League this weekend.

The players that will be missing against Cape Verde are Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Joe Aribo, Etebo, Alex Iwobi, Ola Aina, Troost-Ekong and Leon Balogun, their exit has greatly affected the Nigerian team especially in defence.

The team is depleted but the defence has been left in shambles with only one player remaining from the team that beat Liberia.

Williams Troost-Ekong and Leon Balogun has been nicknamed the "Oyibo Wall", both players are the first choice center back pairing and they have been solid since they first played together, but against Cape Verde they will be absent and so will Ola Aina, the trio were in the starting defence line up that beat Liberia 2-0.

The big question is how will Nigeria Cope without the three players, well the German tactician has other center-backs and he can always switch up his formation to give his team a more defensive set up.

Here are two possible ways Gernot Rohr might set up the Nigeria defence in the absence of the Oyibo Wall and Ola Aina.

First Option

Here Rohr should go with a 4-man defence, in the previous game Jamiu Collins, Balogun, Troost-Ekong and Ola Aina made up the 4-man defence, going into the game against Cape Verde, Tyrone Ebuehi should take over Ola Aina's right back spot.

At center-back, Chidozie Awaziem and Keneth Omeruo should pair while Jamiu Collins retains his left back spot.

Second Option

Here Rohr should go with a 3:4:3 formation, that will see Nigeria switch to a 5-man defence without the ball and attack with a 3 man defence.

At left wing and right wing back, Jamiu Collins and Tyrone Ebuehi remains indispensable, while Kenneth Omeruo, Chidozie Awaziem and Adeleke Adekunle are the center-backs.

what do you think about this potential defence line?
