Obviously, the world player of year nominees have been unveiled with the award set to be handed out to the winner on the 29th of November. Although many fans out there and bookmakers has tip Lionel Messi to be the clear favourite for the most prestigious individual award in football.
While Messi may have won the hearts of the fan, media and many football experts with his exploits in the Copa America where he led his Nation to their first Continental Glory in 28 years, I think Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski should also be considered for the top award for numerous reasons.
Looking at 2020 season, Robert Lewandowski was the clear favourite for the award after his treble winning season with Bayern Munich and breaking swveral records. It is worth knowing that Robert Lewandowski won the top scorer award in all the competitions he played in, ranging from the German cup, the German Bundesliga and Uefa Champions league.
Unfortunately for him, the 2020 award was cancelled due to covid-19, a decision many criticized. Anyways, talking about the 2021 award, Lewandowski should be considered for the award for the following reason:
Firstly, he's never won the award in his career and Lionel Messi already has six of the award to his name.
Secondly, the polish striker won more trophies both individual and collective team trophies on the year 2021. He also scored more goals, and had more goal contributions (59) than Leo (52).
Thirdly, the award should be given to him as a compensation for missing out of the 2020 Award which he clearly deserves by a far margin.
And lastly, after 13 long years, the Ronaldo-Messi duopoly needs to come to an end. For me, it's high time a few other great players have a sniff at the Award Robert Lewandowski being one of them.
in conclusion, to the many Messi fans out there, maximum respect, but in all honesty, this year award should be given to Robert Lewandowski.
