The blues will be starting their champions league campaign with a very important game against Zenit St. Petersburg this week. The truth of the matter is that Thomas Tuchel have turned this Chelsea team into one of the favorite teams to win the UEFA Champions league this season. The lineup seen below, shows how the blues could possibly be lining up for their first UEFA Champions league game for this season.
According to the lineup, Eduard Mendy will still be starting in between the sticks. The goalkeeper have been very impressive for the blues. The goalkeeper won the UEFA golden glove award and as such will be expected to put up a very impressive display against Zenit St. Petersburg. The shot stopper will be expected to have a 3-man defensive backline which could consist of Thiago Silva, Ceasar Azplicueta and Antonio Rudiger.
Tuchel made use of a different backline in his last Premier league game in order to rest some of his key players as he needed them to be fresh and not tired. Although Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger played that game. Reece James and Marcus Alonso will be starting in that right and left full-back positions respectively.
The truth of the matter is that Thomas Tuchel's preference of Marcus Alonso over Ben Chilwell have come as a surprise to many Chelsea fans. In Chelsea's last game, Tuchel handed Saul Niguez his Premier league debut due to the absence of N'golo Kante. The Spanish midfielder failed to impress in front of Chelsea fans and as such Tuchel had to take him out during the break.
In the midfield, N'golo Kante will be expected to start alongside Jorginho. Although the Frenchman might not be fully fit for that game. In Chelsea's attack, Romelu Lukaku and Kai Havertz will be expected to combine excellently in order to make Chelsea's attack even more lethal. Mason Mount will be starting in that attacking midfield position to provide the adequate support needed by Lukaku & Havertz upfront.
