Argentina legend Diego Maradona is to undergo surgery. Check what happened to him

Argentina legend Diego Maradona is to undergo "routine surgery" on a blood clot on his brain, the Argentina legend's doctor has confirmed.

Maradona had been hospitalised to Ipensa clinic in Buenos Airesnight for anaemia and dehydration, though the 60-year-old's condition had been improving, his personal doctor had said earlier on Tuesday.

Leopoldo Luque, Maradona's personal physician, said the surgery would being around 8pm local time.

"We are going to operate. He is lucid, he understands, he agrees with the intervention," Luque told reporters.

Recall, he attended the side's game against Patronato on Friday, his 60th birthday, as he is now the coache of Gimnasia y Esgrima in Argentina's top flight.

Luque added that Maradona will be transferred to Olivos Clinic in Buenos Aires province.

Widely considered one of the greatest players of all time, Maradona won the 1986 World Cup with Argentina before falling short in the final four years later. 

Dozens of the club's fans have converged on the hospital since Monday evening, waving flags and holding posters with messages of support as they waited for news of Maradona's health.
