In Nigeria most especially, there is this notion that tall guys can't play football. When they see a tall person going to the field with boots, they advise him to try basketball. Worst, if you're playing, they prefer you play defence because you are huge which will make you more suitable. They believe that short players are the only best players suitable for midfield, playmaker positions and attack. No doubt, they got it from the likes of Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Modric, Maradona, Pele and a host of many others. But it is completely untrue.
The French national team that won the Euros in the year 2000 were filled with a lot of tall players. Even better, there are a host of tall players who were the best in football and not particularly in defence and they are still showing themselves now. Let's look at some of the best.
5. Dennis Bergkamp
The "non-flying Dutchman". He was one of the best players of his generation. He started out as a wide midfielder, then a striker and then a second striker and ever since he got into that role, no one took that place from him. Best of all, he was a tall play maker with a height of 6ft 0 inches.
4. Michael Laudrup
It was from this Danish superstar that the skill called "La Croqueta" was popular. A skill Messi and Iniesta use to destroy players. He was one of the best players in his time, playing for top teams like Juventus, Ajax, Barcelona and Real Madrid. When he was at Barcelona, he helped them win Real Madrid 5-0. The following season, he went to Real Madrid and helped them win Barcelona 5-0, with him at the helm of things. But he had a stature height of 6ft yet he was pulling all the strings.
3. Kai Havertz
Current Chelsea and Germany playmaker, he has a height of 6ft 2inches which approximate to 1.89m. Yet he is still that good. He has the speed, the pass, the composure and the intelligence for a playmaker. And he is only 21. He has a bright future already.
This was the absolute best of his generation. Many people fell in love with football because of him. He was a master entertainer. And that smile on his face was enough to make your day. He could do things out of the extraordinary. He was too good. He mentored the now GOAT, Lionel Messi. Dribbler, amazing passer of the ball and scorer of goals, he was just that fantastic. But it will shock you that this GOAT is 6ft tall yet he did things that look godly. If he can, you can.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo
The GOAT. This beast is completely insane. There is a short GOAT, Lionel Messi. But there is a taller one, Cristiano Ronaldo. Except the World Cup and Confederations Cup, what hasn't he won? He is the king of the Champions League. He is the King wherever he goes. But guess what, he is 1.87m tall which equals to 6ft 2inches. A living example of hard work. He has 5 Balons D'or to his name. Best, he is the greatest goal scorer in history.
So, my dear tall footballers. Don't let anyone look down on you(or rather look up at you). These players were the best. Football isn't about height, it's about sense. So go out there and show them what you got.
