Barcelona have made the decision to give the number 10 jersey to La Masia graduate Ansu Fati and many Barcelona fans are delighted about it, but this article explains the reason why Barcelona have made a very big mistake by handing out the number 10 shirt to Ansu Fati.
Ansumane “Ansu” Fati is a Barcelona player who graduated from the club’s famous La Masia academy. Ansu Fati made his debut for Barcelona in July 2019 and that kickstarted his senior career with the Barça. Since his debut, Ansu Fati has been highlighted as one of the best young forwards in football.
Early last season, he suffered a very bad injury that ruled him out for most of last season, and he is just recovering and rejoining the Barça squad this year but he has been handed the prestigious number 10 shirt vacated by Barcelona’s greatest ever player Lionel Messi.
Barcelona have made a huge mistake by giving Ansu Fati that number 10 shirt.
The number 10 shirt at a club like Barcelona comes with a very huge responsibility.
The reason why it is a very bad Idea to give Ansu Fati the number 10 shirt is the fact that he is just coming back from a long Injury lay-off.
Ansu Fati suffered a very bad knee injury in November 2020 and he has not played a competitive match for almost nine months. Just the pressure of rediscovering his best form after such a long injury lay-off is much for a young player like Ansu Fati, but there is now an added pressure of being Barcelona’s number 10.
Ansu Fati could take months to get back to his best and that in itself is a lot of pressure on a young player, so Barcelona should have not added to his worries by making him the new number 10.
Ansu Fati is no doubt a talented player, but long injury lay-offs often derail the developments of young players.
The case of Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi comes to mind. The Chelsea winger was having a good breakthrough season in 2018/19 until he sustained an achilles injury that ruled him out for months, the impact if the injury is still evident as Hudson-Odoi is now struggling to even get game time at Chelsea.
Barcelona should have let Ansu Fati fully recover and rediscover his great form before handing him the number 10 shirt which comes with added pressure.
