Belgium lost by 3 goals to 2 to France in the second UEFA Nations league Semi Final to determine who will face the Spanish National team in the Finals.
Prior to this match, Lukaku have not scored a single goal for Chelsea in his last 4 matches which started from the game against Tottenham Hotspur down to Manchester City and then to Juventus then to last weekend match against Southampton FC.
Scoring today will bring a big relief to the Belgium striker but Chelsea Manager should have learnt one or two things from how the Belgium coach, Martinez set up his team so as to bring out the best in Lukaku.
It is important to note that Martinez deployed a formation somehow similar to that been deployed by Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea. The Spanish tactician played a 3-4-3 formation while Tuchel's favorite formation is the 3-4-2-1 formation.
What then did Martinez's formation did differently to help Lukaku?
He surrounded Lukaku with very creative players: Martinez deployed a front 3 that had Eden Harzard on the left wing, Romelu Lukaku in the center and Kevin De Bruyne on the right side of the attack.. It is a well known fact that these Hazard and De Bruyne are two of the best goal creators in the world. So it was easy to get Lukaku to score loads of goals with that kind of formation. While these 2 do the creative duties, Lukaku will do the scoring. But in Chelsea, the Belgian is deployed upfront with two creative players like Mason Mount and Kai Havertz behind him. This has not worked perfectly as Lukaku could be isolated easily by a strong and intelligent defenders just as we saw between him and Leonardo Bonucci during Chelsea's 1-0 loss to Juventus.
