In 2019, The former Leicester City man was arguably the first name that comes to the mind of Gareth Southgate when he is considering the left side of his defense but the pendulum has now swung towards someone else despite Chilwell's improved performance which aided Chelsea to a champions league glory last season.

The Euro 2020 saw Luke Shaw been preferred for the entirety of the competition and Chilwell's return to Chelsea also saw him lose his place to Marcos Alonso.

The 24-year-old needs to learn how to up his game for his club, show positive character, willingness, and vibe to excel in his designated role, no coach in his right sense would bench or not invite a player who is performing at a high level.

Chilwell's late call-up is a message that he isn't the first choice but he is there as a virtual of injury to his clubmate but he should keenly follow Southgate's instruction, train hard, and if the coach picks him to play in the qualifying rounds, he should take it with both hands. He has a lot to gain if he performs excellently well for his country and he could return to Chelsea as the first choice in the left-back role.
