The race for the 2021 Ballon D'or is undoubtedly between Leo Messi and Robert Lewandowski, with the pair going head to head again for the second consecutive year. This article will focus solemnly on why Leo will win the Ballon D'or this year.
This YEAR's Stats/Trophies:
-42 Goals in 54 Games Played;
-Copa America Title;
-Copa del Rey Title.
Lewandowski has only a slight chance of winning it (Ballon D'or). With the year he has had, Messi deserves the award totally.
Messi Scored 30 league goals, and 4 in the Copa America as well as 5 in the UCL, his contribution for his former team was incredible to say the least. He won the Pichichi (Spanish Golden Boot) for the season, having a margin of 7 goals compared to the player who finished second (Gerard Moreno).
Leo gathered 19 assists over the season, thus proving that he is a better playmaker than a poacher (goal scorer). His 11 league assists placed him second in the most-assists standings in LaLiga last season.
MAGIC ON THE PITCH:
Messi, over the past year, has had 15.64 progressive ball carries per 90 minutes. An amazing 4.58/90 dribble completion rate, which means he has worked wonders with his feet. Not surprising, I know. He sits in the 99th percentile in both aspects amongst other forwards.
His attacking mentality is clearly shown, in his passes attempted rate of 72.49. He has a pass completion of 83%, which is amazing for a player of his on-pitch positioning. His ability to "progress" forward is shown by his progressive passing rate of 9.85/90.
Alright, enough of the numbers. The point is, there has been no overall better, more balanced player than Messi this year. Lewandowski and Haaland may be better at goals; Bruno is a good passer of the ball as well, but what Messi does is a bit of everything, and that's what makes him special.
His last year at Barca has also been decorated with a trophy, which is a cherry on top. The numbers only speak half of what he's accomplished, and this thread too doesn't cover all. He has been pivotal in Barca's success for the past 17 years, and this year wasn't any different.
I think I speak for almost all when I say Leo has been simply astonishing. He sets the standards too high for all, and every time he smashes the ceiling, he further cements himself as the best. This year wasn't any different in Leo's perspective, but it was still top.
The thread ends.
