GOLDEN BOY AWARD: 2 Reasons Why Chelsea Star Billy Gilmour Was Not Nominated

Yesterday, a 40-man list of nominees for the 2021 Golden Boy award was released. It contains several youngsters under the age of 21 who have been brilliant in the football calendar year.

Going through the list, I noticed that Chelsea youngster and academy graduate Billy Gilmour wasn't among the shortlisted names despite Chelsea winning the UCL and his performances with the Scottish national team.

After making some research on some of the shortlisted players, here are some possible reasons why Gilmour was left out.

1. Fewer Number of Appearances

Last season, before he joined Norwich on loan, Billy Gilmour managed only 7 appearances across all competitions - 5 in the English Premier League and 2 in the UEFA Champions League. This was majorly due to a long term injury that he suffered.

2. Lack of Goals

Thorough research showed that most of the nominees for the Golden Boot award scored at least one goal during the calendar year. However, due to lack of game time, and probably his plating position as a deep holding midfielder, Gilmour failed to register a single goal.

Despite not making the shortlist, this does not change the fact that Gilmour is a talented player and one for the future.
