EPL: Why Arsenal Lost To Liverpool Yesterday

The Gunners lost yesterday's match as they were thrashed 4-0 by their opponents, Liverpool who kept a clean sheet at the match .Although the side fielded by Unai Emery was far superior to the ones of last season, the results remained unchanged . However every Arsenal fan must have left Anfield with pieces of positivity and a mentality of hope for the rest of the season, for it was encouraging to see Arsenal's centre of defense so impenetrable during the first quarter of the match as they ensured that no ball passed through them to support the goalkeeper.

It was difficult to view the Gunners keeping a clean sheet against a team like Liverpool which has a vigorous and relentless attack.

Liverpool's forwards- Sadio Mane, Mohammed Salah and Firmino continued steady aggressive attacks at the Gunners defense until it started slacking down and the resolve of this relentless defense was broken.

In this article, we look at possible reasons Arsenal lost to Liverpool yesterday.

Ever since Kolo Toure and Sol Campbell left the Gunners, their defense had been in shambles.

The reason David was acquired was necessary to fill the space left by the exit of Laurent Koscienly. They should have understood that David came with the tag of being a defender who does not enjoy defending.

Given a chance, David Luiz would prefer playing further ahead, probably in the role of Xhaka , which was underlined in his abandonment of responsibility when he strayed forward to win a header that should have been the duty of a midfielder.

This made enough space for Mohammed Salah to score his second goal. Moreover, the first goal was scored by Joel Matip through a header in the dying minutes of the first half. The third goal by Salah would have been avoided had David Luiz not made such a mistake.

Joel Matip's goal through a corner kick and a header would have been a little different had Sokratis attacked the ball rather than grabbing Van Dijk's jersey. If Joel had missed his header , VAR would have awarded a penalty because of the obstruction by the Dutch defender. This might be debatable between Sokratis obstruction and David Luiz's unpredictable move.

But the problem lies at the owner of Arsenal who rather sees it as an avenue to cut corners and accumulate wealth rather than bring the club into its prime and restore it's previous glory. Moreover, if there is a scarcity of funds to acquire a vigorous and agile defender like Van Dijk, then there is a slim chance of Arsenal keeping a clean sheet or their defense problem overcomed. Yesterday's results can be viewed as a stumbling block to success. Neither Liverpool or Manchester City's performances were impressive during the beginning of this season yet it took some time to bring them to standards .It takes time to build a team of individuals who can understand and assist each other in a game while playing to their strengths. This was evident yesterday following the omission of Lacazette . He has been one of the Gunners most accomplished strikers with his superior hit rate although Aubameyang had been the goal scoring machine.

Consequently, the lack of a superior right back and Monreal's lack of pace yesterday all contributed to Arsenal's defeat . The Gunners played with close knitted midfielders allowing Alexander Arnold and Robertson to run into the space and cross their balls from either side; this could have been avoided if the wing backs were speedy.
