Would you believe this if you were told by a friend? Would you believe that there is actually a town where about half the population live underground? We knew you wouldn't believe it. Initially, we didn't believe it too. Such a town however EXISTS! Its name is Coober Pedy.
Actually, people living underground is not something new. In the past, during times when there were wars and rumours of wars, people would find ways to hide from the enemy. One of such ways was to go underground and hide away from plain sight.
Coober Pedy is a town in Australia. Australia is a English speaking Island country located some distances away from Asia. Australia also happens to be the name of the continent that contains Australia, Tasmania and several small islands, some of which are under the control of Australia.
Coober Pedy used to a mining town. However, its location was a MAJOR PROBLEM. Coober Pedy is located in one of the harshest regions of mainland Australia. The heat there is terrible. Australia is actually the driest continent in the world. In case you are planning to move to Australia soon, you should know this.
Because of the intense heat, residents of Coober Pedy devised a really smart way to avoid the heat. They live underground. It is not all the people of Coober Pedy that live underground though. Only about half of the population live underground.
In this underground communities are churches, malls, hotels and even schools. These underground residences are called "dugouts".
On the surface, Coober Pedy looks a lot like a ghost town, a deserted place. Few people would ever guess that people are living life underground.
According to residents, living under the ground is with many advantages. Other than safety from the severe surface heat, the houses are sound filtered, and therefore you will not need to worry about disturbing your neighbours.
Underground, temperatures are much cooler than the surface. Many desert animals use this principle to escape the surface heat of the desert. To biologists, the fact that half of Coober Pedy live underground isn't much of a surprise.
Some people actually live life the luxurious way in these dugouts. Some even have indoor swimming pools. You can even find book shops, hotels and churches down there!
Below are pictures of hotels, churches, bookstores and jewellery shops in the Coober Pedy's underground town.
