The 36-year-old scored 29 goals after 33 league appearances to emerge winner in the recently concluded season ahead of Romelu Lukaku to managed 24 goals in 36 games.
Barcelona legend on the other hand scored 30 goals in 35 matches and win the award for the eighth time in his career – becoming the first player to achieve such feat.
Recalled that both Messi and Ronaldo also crashed out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage with both PSG and FC Porto ousting both clubs this season.
Meanwhile, Chelsea and Manchester City are the finalists this season and it is left to be seen where the trophy is headed at the end of the game.
