3 Mistakes Solskjaer Made Against Leicester That He Can't Afford to Make Against Atalanta

Manchester United fell to a disappointing 4-2 loss to Leicester City and this has mounted even more pressure on the Manchester United boss. He has now presided over two wins in seven matches in all competitions and this has led to the majority of Manchester United fans calling for his head. Manchester United head into matchday 3 of the Champions League with three points from two matches. They play against an Atalanta team that is popular for their attacking style of play and if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is to get a favourable result he has to play his cards right.

Looking at Manchester United's matchday 2 performance, although they got all three points, they were lacklustre for most of the match. A performance of such would be catastrophic as Atalanta would be ready to capitalize on any loophole in the Manchester United defense.

Against Leicester City, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made three obvious mistakes which led to Manchester United's loss and he can't afford to make such mistakes against Atalanta. Those mistakes are:

1. Starting an unfit player

The Manchester United tactician started Harry Maguire, who had just returned from a short spell on the sidelines. The Manchester United captain put in a horror performance as he was responsible for at least two of Leicester City's goals in the match. If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes this same mistake against Atalanta, the Italian side would gladly capitalize and punish Manchester United.

2. Overly defensive style of play

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set his team up to sit back and counter-attack against Leicester City. This system has worked for the Red Devils on numerous occasions but it failed this time around because Manchester United was missing key players who could lead the press. Edinson Cavani who is notorious for his agility and pressing abilities was not available and Cristiano Ronaldo, who led the line, does not have the energy required to lead the press. Therefore, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must endure his team does not park the bus, but if they must, then he should start Edinson Cavani.

3. Starting Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic in midfield

The midfield axis of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic were used against Leicester City and their partnership left much to be desired. With the lack of pace of both players, Manchester United's midfield was too open and this contributed to Manchester United's capitulation in the second half.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must utilize a more dynamic and energetic midfield axis if he wants his team to win the midfield battle against Atalanta.
