FIFA World Cup

Nigeria losing on its own turf is inadequate considering the quality of players in the national team

The Super Eagles got an undeserving loss against the Central African Republic at Teslim Balogun Stadium this evening. A late goal from the visitors was enough to make the Eagles lose a vital three points that would have secured their qualification to the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Not an exciting game to watch down there this evening. The players tried to pull up some stunts with their individual ability, they could have done better today. Following this game on papers, CRA is no match for Nigeria. The expectation is to whip them with a high goal margin, especially when they are right there at the Eagles' home.

Sometimes you have to evaluate these games by looking at the future of the National team. Right now, we can't say the coach, Gernot Rohr has got a playing style with this team. For example, the likes of Osimhen, Iheanacho and Taiwo Awoniyi are good forwards in their club team. Coming down to the National team, they find it difficult to replicate their club performances.

The Coach has more work to do, many of these players are top-notch in their various clubs. There is the need to bring them together to play a particular game plan, not just knocking the ball around the pitch. If the Eagles can't find a game plan before the World Cup starts, it's gonna be difficult to give them all the ace to shine in the competition.

So many Super Eagles supporters would be disappointed with what they saw down there in Teslim Balogun stadium today. We know it's football and anything can happen but we haven't seen that optimism from the team. Just some individual players striving to make a difference in a match. The central African Republic played a team football, they held on to their strategy by defending so deep till the 90 minutes. A strategy that worked for them because clearly, the Super Eagles couldn't tear down the defense. As I said earlier, the coach still has more work to do with the team.
