Gabriel Martinelli Needs To Improve In Two Key Areas Of His Gameplay To Get Into Arsenal's First-XI

Arsenal signed Gabriel Martinelli from Brazilian club Ituano for 6 million pounds in 2019 during the reign of Spanish manager Unai Emery. The young winger had a very good debut season after producing a lot of outstanding performances.

After the sacking of Unai Emery due to poor results, fellow countryman Mikel Arteta was appointed as Arsenal manager and he spoke highly of how talented and committed Gabriel Martinelli is.

After a severe injury to the knee during training, Gabriel Martinelli spent 169 days in rehabilitation before he returned to the Arsenal squad. Barely a month later he picked up two more injuries which kept him out for 1 and 8 days.

Since his return from injury, Mikel Arteta barely played Martinelli but yesterday, Arsenal played out a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium and Gabriel Martinelli was introduced into the game later in the second half.

Although the young Brazilian winger was lively and full of energy, his cameo showed that he needs to improve in two areas of his gameplay to get into Arsenal's first-eleven.

1. Gabriel Martinelli has speed, high energy and can be devastating when he has space to run into during counterattacks but his use of the ball in tight spaces is quite average. He often tried to dribble around when under pressure and only got himself into more dangerous situations.

The likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard are excellent at using the ball in tight spaces and to get into the starting line-up, Gabriel Martinelli has to improve massively on that aspect of his gameplay.

2. The Brazilian winger also needs to get his timing and combinational play right. There were times when he needed to take a touch and pass but taking an extra touch ruined many chances of combining with teammates in more dangerous positions.

These are two aspects of Gabriel Martinelli's gameplay that he needs to improve on to get himself into Arsenal's first-eleven.
