For the first time since 1956, the Balon Dor Award will not be given to any player in 2020.
The Balon dor is an annual football award given by Football France, a French News Magazine to the most prestigious footballer of the year.
This award has been dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for almost a decade but this time they are not the favorites. The Polish striker, Robert Lewandowski was the name on everybody's lips before the announcement that the Award will not be given in 2020. He had an extraordinary year and would have easily won the award.
But what must have prompted this announcement?
See the reasons given by the Editor in chief of France Football, Pascal Ferre.
He said this season wasn't a usual one because of the outbreak of the Pandemic. As football fans already know, the French League and other leagues were canceled because of the Coronavirus outbreak. It was only the English Premier League, Serie A, La Liga and Bundesliga that continued. This makes it unfair for the other players in the other league.
Mr. Pascal Ferre said, "From a sports perspective, two months (January and February), out of the eleven generally required to form an opinion and decide who should lift the trophies, represent far too little to gauge and judge; without forgetting that the other games were played – or will be played – in unordinary conditions (behind closed doors, with five replacements, Champions League’s Final 8 played in a single game)."
He said the decision to cancel the award was made by all the stakeholders and that it wasn't an easy one to make but for the sake of fairness and equity, the Balon Dor family will not gather until 2021.
What do you think of the decision?
Is it the right decision or is it unfair?
Would the have canceled it if Lionel Messi was the favorites?
