Nigerian midfielder Azubuike Okechukwu is one of the names in the history books of Turkish's Istanbul Basaksehir after the Midfielder played a role in helping the Super Lig Side to win their first ever Turkish Super Lig title.
The 23-year old former Bayelsa United captain joined Basaksehir on loan from Egyptian side Pyramid FC in January.
With only one game to spare in the season in Turkey, Istanbul Baseksehir were named the new champions thanks to their 1-0 win on Sunday, July 19, over Kayserispor. Basaksehir's latest league win also ended the dominance of the Super Lig’s top teams Fenerbahce, Galatasaray and Besiktas who have 54 titles among them.
Okechukwu became the fifth Nigerian player to win the Turkish Super Lig title, Emmanuel Emenike, former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo, Henry Onyekuru and Uche Okechukwu are the other Nigerian players who also achieved the feat of winning the Super Lig title.
Reports also have it that Basaksehir are in talks with Pyramids FC over the possibility of signing Azubuike on a permanent deal this summer.
Born April 19th,1997 in Katsina the Northern Nigeria, Azubuike joined Bayelsa United in 2013 and has since then played for Yeni Malatyaspor, Pyramids FC and Çaykur Rizespor. He was selected by Nigeria for their 35-man provisional squad for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.
I hope Azubuike's form will earn him a national team call-up from coach Gernot Rohr.
