Opinion: Arteta should not play Xhaka if they want to beat Tottenham on Sunday

Xhaka will be part of the Arsenal matchday squad for the North London derby against Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The Switzerland international midfielder – who cost Arsenal £30 million when they signed him from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2016, as reported by Sky Sports at the time – has served his three-match suspension now.

Arsenal won all their three matches while Xhaka was away. Sambi, Partey, Niles, Odegaard and Rowe have all been used in the middle.

Evaluating Arsenal's performances during Xhaka's suspension, Arsenal were more advanced in the middle. Odegaard had more opportunities to drive the ball forward. Party and sat deep in the middle but was providing the necessary Shields for Odegaard and Lokonga.

Arsenal were more creative. It was also noticed that Arsenal had urgency in the middle, especially against Wimbledon in Carabao Cup.

Arsenal will face Tottenham tomorrow in a game that stands to be a statement for Mikel Arteta if he wins. Arsenal have all the requirements needed to beat in-form Tottenham but Mikel Arteta must pay attention to his selection.

In my opinion, Arteta should not start Xhaka in order to avoid a red card. Arteta should start Lokonga, Party and Odegaard in the middle.

It is a must win match for Arteta and how he selects his team goes a long way.
