Odion Ighalo eased the pressure on his lean shoulders as a young manager who found himself doing a job meant for the strong at heart, the Manchester United job was too soon for Ole Gunner Solksjaer but he had to succeed or get the sack. With results not going his way and injuries to key players, especially his forward men, the Baby-face assasin looked to the far east and found a Nigerian who was highly recommended to help him keep his job. And fortunately, Ighalo was the perfect fit and the smiles returned to the faces of Ole and United fans. He was promptly rewarded with a contract extension in a protracted negotiation with his Chinese club, Shanghai Shenhua.
But things have since changed with the former Super Eagles star confined to the bench with the return from injury of Anrhony Martial and Marcus Rahford. Truth is Odion deserves more than a place on the bench.
Anyhow, it's mission accomplished for Odion, for he has had his day, dreams do come true.
Not many believed the news making the rounds then that he was on his way to Manchester United. But it did happen, a loan deal on January transfer deadline day from Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua and he hit the ground running with goals and eye-catching performances.
The former Watford striker is, however, yet to start a Premier League game for the Old Trafford outfit, with all his nine appearances for the club being from the bench.
With a fit squad at Ole’s disposal and players doing well, the former Nigerian international looks good enough as backup notwithstanding his impressive performances in the cup competitions.
Ighalo has scored five goals and provided one assist in 14 appearances across all competitions since his arrival at Old Trafford.
Obviously, the 31-year-old should be on his way to China when his extended loan deal ends in Janaury 2021. Whatever happens, dreams do come true, as he goes down in history as the first true Nigerian to play for Manchester United. Nothing beats that!
