Not many African teams rank very high in the FIFA rankings as African teams mostly fail to win games against other countries outside Africa. This could be due to the fact that African football is still growing and it's facilities, outdated. However even with these, some countries have actually impressed and gotten very high in the world rankings.
Football in Nigeria has been undergoing slow but steady development and it seems like it has begun to produce results as Nigeria are currently ranked the 34th best team that in the world and the 5th best in Africa.
This However, is not anywhere near their all time high as the country was ranked 5th in the world as of 1994. This was when Nigeria participated in their first ever world cup and also won the AFCON.
Ghana currently sits as the 53rd best team in the world which is not a surprise given their current form. However, they were once ranked 14 in the world as 2008 which is the highest that they have achieved in their history.this could be credited to their success in the World Cup Qualifiers that year where they kept a 100 percent record.
3. South Africa.
As of 1996 South Africa could boast of being the 16th best team in the world something that didn't come easy at the time. However that is a far cry from their current 73rd position which would have been easily prevented if the country just had a little more consistency.
Kenya has never been an African footballing powerhouse but they seem to be getting there slowly. As of 2008, they ranked 68th but are currently ranked 102nd position in the world. Hopefully it wouldn't be long before they finally get what they wish for.
