The Headache: Who Should Start For Manchester United?

Manchester United manager Olegunnar Solskjaer has a big headache.

Matic, Pogba, McTominay, Fred, Fernandes, Pereira

How much of a headache? A good one. What do I mean? All of these players are fully fit. Yes. Fit. The acquisition of Bruno Fernandes had clos

ed the gap that was present in the attacking third but what does it now mean with the return of Paul Pogba from his injury? It means a lot.

It would technically mean that job roles on the pitch should literally be defined with midfield permutations sorted out per game as each game would have different requirements.

What are the possible permutations?

I think Ole should be able to managed that terrain the way Fergie managed to his under-listed colleagues especially between 2007-2009

Anderson, Carrick, Scholes, Gibson, Fletcher, Hargreaves, Giggs with O'Shea in the mix often.

At that time, Fergie would use a permutation of two midfielders and these help keep the team fresh.

For instance, permutations like Carrick/Anderson, Scholes/Hargreaves, Hargreaves/Fletcher, Gibson/Carrick, Anderson/Scholes etc were often deployed in games that suited certain tempos with different levels of attacking intensity.

In a counter attacking setup, Pogba is your main man as he would easily help with your fast paced runs from the deep but if you want to playing attacking and overload football, Bruno is your go-to guy.

In terms of deployment of both players together in the same game, playing Pogba as your deep lying playmaker would benefit you with Bruno Fernandes up top as your attacking midfielder/playmaker.

Starting these two players will leave you room for one extra player in the midfield and that's where the problem is.

It would be hard to bench Fred as he has come a long way and was arguably one of the best players before the Premier League was suspended. The problem here is that he is a ball carrier so it's not expected that he would hold position playing next to Pogba.

That leaves us with Matic and McTominay. Both will do a decent job at holding position and becoming a secondary defensive shield but the difference is while Matic is stronger at winning the ball, McTominay keeps the basic things simple and he's very efficient.

It also remains to be seen how he uses his 3 strikers in Ighalo, Martial and Rashford. Funny enough, it's Daniel James that I think would have benefitted from the break. He had lost that initial steam and I am sure he would never have envisaged playing so much in the first team.

In the defense, Lindelof still needs to step up his game but I would suggest that Bailly is the right partner for Maguire. I also think Luke Shaw is very adept to playing on the left side of a 3 center back set up but I would favor Brandon Williams as an out and out left jack of the system is meant to be a back four.
