John Obi Mikel was born on 22 April 1987in Jos, Nigeria. He started playing football where was a child. He was chosen to play at Pepsi Football Academy when he was 12 years old. He stood out and was scouted to play for Plateau United. He played for Nigeria in the FIFA Under 17 World Championships hosted in Finland where Mikel was submitted instead of Michael, and that was the first time he traveled out of the country.
He later played for Nigeria in the FIFA World Youth Championship hosted in the Netherlands, where Nigeria lost to Argentina in the final, and he won a silver ball as the second-best player of the tournament. He played for Lyn Football Club in Norway from 2003-2005 when Manchester United announced their interest in signing him but did not pass through his agents, but Chelsea came with the claim that they had agreed about his signing with his agent.
Mikel Obi confirmed that he would join Manchester United and was pictured with a Manchester United shirt with squad number 21, but later claimed to receive threatening phone calls from unknown sources. He was absent during a cup match between Lyn and Klemetsrud. He was said to have been kidnapped, and the Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz accused Chelsea of being involved in the alleged kidnap. It was later discovered that Mikel Obi traveled with his agent to London. He stated that he had been pressurized to sign the contract with Manchester United without the consent of his agent.
Mikel Obi refused to return to Lyn which made them complain to FIFA about the player's behavior and FIFA ruled that he should return to Lyn to complete his contract with the club while they decide on the cancellation of the contract with Manchester United.
Chelsea later intervened to resolve the transfer problem between the clubs and the player. They paid a total of £16 million to Manchester United and Lyn and we're granted the transfer of the player from Lyn Football Club to Chelsea Football Club.
Mikel Obi played for Chelsea from 2006-2017, He later went to a Chinese club Tianjin TEDA where he played for 2017-2018 and moved back to England where he played on loan for Middlesbrough in 2019. He is presently playing for Trabzonspor in Italy.
