The highlight of Nigerian players in action across Europe on Sunday was a huge performance by Villarreal of Spain winger, Samuel Chukwueze, equally great form from Fernebahce of Turkey forward, Bright Osayi-Samuel and a goal by Norwich City’s Adam Uche Idah in the English Championship.
In Spain, Chukwueze was the lonely shinning light for Villarreal, but he could not change their story from not a single victory after seven LaLiga matches, following their 2-0 loss to table-topping Atlético de Madrid.
Despite playing in their favourite home ground in Estadio de la Ceramica, Unai Emery's side failed to make their opportunities count, even with Chukwueze making his first LaLiga start of the year.
Chukwueze ended up being named King of the Match despite his tam’s defeat, as he personally dazzled down the right side of attack and caused problems for Atlético’s defence, against which he made four key passes, more than any other player on the pitch, in 90 minutes of action.
In Turkey, Osayi-Samuel had the last laugh on Anthony Nwakaeme’s Trabzonspor, as The Yellow Canary stole a 1-0 win over their Turkish Super Lig rivals and, though both Nigerian forwards failed to score in the encounter, the victorious lad would take delight in helping his Istanbul-based side eke out three points from a very tight game.
Nwakaeme has been impressive for The Black Sea Storm since his arrival at the club in 2018 and he got another starting role, but his efforts could not stop Fenerbahçe from clinching a 1-0 win in Sunday’s Turkish Super Lig fixture.
The forwards gave a good account of themselves in the encounter but could not uplift The Black Sea Storm, who were on an 11-game winning streak, having last lost a game against Galatasaray in December before their impressive run was halted at Senol Gunes Akyazi Stadyumu.
Nwakaeme, who has scored six league goals this season and provided five assists in 20 games, amid other dazzling displays, featured for the duration of the game, struck six shots, completed four dribbles and had 66 touches on the ball.
Osayi-Samuel, who got his sixth Super Lig game since teaming up with the Yellow Canaries from Championship side Queens Park Rangers, featured for 74 minutes, made three key passes and completed two dribbles to help his side secure victory, as Fenerbahçe clinched all three points.
In England, Adam Idah got one of the goals that helped Norwich City extend their lead atop the Championship table to seven points with a 2-0 win away to Wycombe Wanderers.
Idah and Teemu Pukki both found the net on an evening Wycombe kept the visitors goalless for 51 minutes, after which Anis Mehmeti went closest for Wanderers when his low first-half drive whistled past the post, but the league leaders looked in control throughout.
Norwich made two alterations, with Ben Gibson and Onel Hernandez coming in as they searched for a fifth consecutive win, an 18th goal of the season for Pukki broke the deadlock and Idah wrapped things up three minutes from time.
Mehmeti appeared to be relishing a more forward role behind Wycombe striker, Uche Ikpeazu and the two combined well, with the Nigerian-born lad adding a flick before unleashing a left-footed shot just wide of the goal, as Idah’s side went on to claim all three points.
