5 players who can breathe life into Nigeria national team

With the 2022 World Cup qualifiers some weeks away, it's time for Gernot Rohr to rebuild his squad. Ademetan Abayomi picks five players that need to be part of a new look Super Eagles.

5. Daniel Akpeyi - Kaizer Chiefs

Maduka Okoye has made the Nigeria number one jersey his own over the past few months, but the Sparta Rotherdam stopper has come up short in some games. Within a team that dominates possession like Nigeria, a goalkeeper needs to be reliable when called upon.

Daniel Akpeyi is an excellent shot stopper and is more demanding of his area than Okoye, while the passion shown by the ageless keeper would be a welcome addition to an uninspired side.

4. Azubuike Okechukwu - Sivasspor

Nigeria missing someone to dominate the midfield. The answer to the problem may be Azubuike Okechukwu.

An energetic, strong and quick grafter, Zuby has added control and fight to a Sivasspor midfield which centres around creativity.

Comparisons are already being made to the likes of Sunday Oliseh and Muda Lawal, Zuby would add an extra dimension to Rohr's squad.

3. Michael Olise - Crystal Palace

With all the possession the Super Eagles players look short of any ideas or creativity on the pitch.

Nigeria need to add spark back into their midfield and the man to do it could be Crystal Palace new boy Michael Olise. The youngster creates and scores goals for fun, and is the perfect heir for Jay Jay Okocha in the number ten role, if given the chance. Possessing a lethal control, Olise is dangerous from anywhere on the pitch with excellent vision and set piece deliveries.

2. Felix Uduokhai - Augsburg

Uduokhai offers more threat than either Leon Balogun or William Troost-Ekong.

He does not only possess great organization, awareness and strength, but the lad is also a danger because of his height, which has seen him net a number of headers during his fledgling career.

If continues his rapid development then he should be the undoubted successor to Balogun. Nigeria need to act fast to tie Uduokhai to the Super Eagles.

1. Cyriel Dessers - KRC Genk

It’s now time for Nigeria to give Dessers the chance to lead the line. After just one game, Rohr has overlooked the Belgium eligible forward.

His height and strength make Dessers the perfect target man, while the 26-year-old is also predatory in and around the box, and would link play excellently alongside Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho.
