The Africa Cup of Nations was founded in 1957 since then we have had a couple of different winners every after two years. After being first held in 1957 it, in 1968 it was held after every after two years. Following it’s inception in 1957, a number of countries have on to win the prestigious trophy.
The African Cup of Nations (CAN) initially scheduled for 2021 is postponed to 2022 because of Covid19 which has upset the program of the African Football Confederation. The competition is reduced from January 09 to February 06, 2022 still in Cameroon, the host country.
But before this great mass of African football, it is important to do a retrospection to see the countries which outclass the others during the competition. Which countries hold the record for highest trophies won?
In our search for the countries that have already won the CAN, we realized that only 14 African countries have already lifted this prestigious trophy.
The first country to stand out from the 14 is Egypt. This country alone has 7 cups won in 1957 (first edition), 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010.
The second nation is Cameroon; winner of the continental trophy five times: 1984, 1988, 2000, 2002 and 2017.
Next with the highest trophies Ghana. Has won this cup four times in (1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982)
Next comes Nigeria. has won this cup three times. In 1980, 1994 and 2013.
Côte d'Ivoire, Algeria and DR Congo find themselves in fifth place with the same number of trophies won. Côte d'Ivoire won in 1992 and 2015. Algeria in 1990 and 2019. DR Congo won in 1968 and 1974.
The other 7 countries have won the Africa Cup only once. They are: Zambia (2012), Tunisia 2004), Sudan (1970), Ethiopia (1962), Morocco (1976), South Africa (1996) and Congo (1972).
Which nation will complete the number of its stars, or which new nation will be able to snatch its first star? The date of February 6 will allow us to respond to this concern with certainty.
