Manchester City defeated Chelsea in the lunchtime kick-off match at Stamford Bridge after a great performance from Pep Guardiola's team.
They edged past the blues by a lone goal through Gabriel Jesus deflected shot which pinned Edouard Mendy to the spot in the second half of the game. Manchester City was dominant all through the game with Chelsea forming a low block until the goal came.Although the entire Sky Blues were astounding, one particular player; Ruben Dias should be singled out for his excellent work at the heart of the defence for taming down the tall, hefty and robust Romelu Lukaku.
Romelu Lukaku was barely noticed in the game as he was under close supervision by the defender who continually cut down the opposition threat from either Timo Werner or Lukaku. Lukaku was seen wandering around the pitch like a lost sheep(sorry to say) as he was unable to muster a single shot on goal. His performance was below par, although the coach tried to defend him during the post-match interview. He said: ‘I don’t think it is necessary to talk about Romelu struggling today when we reached Romelu the attack was already half over because there were not enough people and there was simply no belief and connection,’.
Ruben Dias was always seen organizing the defence and dishing out instructions right, left and centre to ensure proper balancing in the backline as they forced the opposition players into making mistakes.
Little wonder Pep Guardiola handed him the captain armband ahead of Kevin Debruyne and Gabriel Jesus who have been in the team long before he joined. He has made more tackles, recoveries, passes, duels won, accurate long balls and interceptions than any defender in the entire Chelsea team.
He has indeed proven why he was voted the UEFA best defender judging by his performance against one of the deadliest attackers in modern football; Romelu Lukaku.
