The Nigerian international grabbed the game-winning goal for Genk in their 2-1 win over Anderlecht in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League Championship Group; a game in which his compatriot Paul Onuachu scored for the 33rd time this season in the Belgian top-flight.
It was his first goal for Genk since he found the back of the net in their 4-2 win over Royal Antwerp.
Since that strike, Dessers has gone 18 games without finding any luck in front of goal; a task made even harder by the fact that the 26-year-old has had to act as backup for the in-form Onuachu (pictured below) who has been the first-choice of Genk coach John van den Brom.
Most of Dessers’ 30 appearances this season have been from the substitutes’ bench. Coming off the bench was not what the Nigerian international had in mind when he arrived in the Belgian Pro League after finishing the previous season as the Dutch Eredivisie's top scorer, but he is happy to have played a big part in Genk’s title-chasing quest.
"It's a relief to score this goal,” said Dessers after the game," said Dessers, who was born in Belgium but opted to play for Nigeria. "It is difficult to train, to warm up each time to play only a few minutes or not at all. Fortunately, this goal gives me a good boost."
