Opinion: Two Possible Reasons Why Willian Agreed To Terminate His Contract With Arsenal

Arsenal signed Brazilian winger Willian Borges on a free transfer from Chelsea last summer. Willian declined a two-year contract extension with Chelsea and made the move across London to the Emirates stadium.

Currently, Arsenal is in a rebuilding process and having just lost the first two matches of the new Premier League season to Brentford FC and Chelsea, the Gunners are releasing underperforming players who will most likely be replaced before the end of the transfer window.

So far, Arsenal has signed Nuno Tavares from Benfica FC for 8 million pounds, Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht for 17 million pounds, Ben White from Brighton and Hove Albion for 50 million pounds.

Last week, Martin Odegaard was signed from Real Madrid for 30 million pounds and Aaron Ramsdale also arrived at the Emirates stadium from Sheffield United for 24 million pounds. To compete for the top four positions, Arsenal needs to sign a central midfielder, a right-back and a striker before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

News emerged that Willian Borges has agreed to terminate his existing contract with Arsenal and leave on a free transfer despite having two years left to run on his deal. The Brazilian winger hasn't performed to expectations since he arrived at the Emirates Stadium last summer.

Here are two possible reasons why the Brazilian winger decided to terminate his contract with the Gunners.

1. In an interview, Willian's father said " Arteta at the beginning said he wanted him(Willian), that he had a project, but the project wasn't confirmed. Since there was a disagreement, the coach knows he doesn't want to stay, so he won't put him on".

This statement from Willian's father reveals that there was a disagreement between Mikel Arteta and Willian Borges. Probably Willian questioned Mikel Arteta's tactics and it led to a big disagreement. Maybe that's the reason why Willian is leaving the club.

2. Willian didn't have a good campaign for Arsenal last season. He sometimes appeared disinterested and lacking the commitment to make things happen for Arsenal on the pitch. It is possible that Mikel Arteta questioned his attitude and commitment towards the club.

When Willian shows up to pre-season training overweight and lacking fitness, that could have been the final straw between the two parties. Maybe that's why Willian is leaving the club.

The Arsenal fans would be hoping that the club replaces Willian Borges with another player that would perform for the team.
