Former Liverpool defender has admitted that he could see Manchester United beating his old club when the two sides go head-to-head at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
United, who have not beaten Liverpool in the league since March 2018, will welcome Jurgen Klopp's side to Old Trafford looking to build on Wednesday evening's stunning comeback win against Atalanta and get their league form back on track.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side is winless in their last three Premier League outings, meaning it is a far-from-ideal form to be taking into a contest against a top Liverpool side who are the only remaining unbeaten club in the Premier League this season.
Jurgen Klopp's side has been in fine form lately, winning their last two games by an aggregate of 8-2.
Despite Liverpool's impressive form, Carragher believes that United could cause a surprise on Sunday, admitting that he would not be surprised to see Solskjaer's side come out on top and secure a return to winning ways in the league.
"I could see Man United winning this game. I think certainly on the back of what happened on Wednesday night, the atmosphere will be fantastic, especially at the start of the game," Carragher told the Essential Football Podcast.
"Manchester United at home against Liverpool notoriously, going back ten or 15 years, they've had Liverpool's number in the fixture. Liverpool has found it really difficult to win at Old Trafford and going back a long time, even the great Liverpool teams, it's always been a venue Liverpool have struggled at.
"Even in Jurgen Klopp's time, I think he's only won there once so it will always be a tough game for Liverpool no matter what the circumstances are or the quality of Man United.
"But there's no doubt that going into the game, Liverpool is a better team. They've proven that over the last few years and at the start of this season and if Liverpool plays well, that could be enough to win.
"But even if they do win this game, it will be very tight. Man United have got great players, they're at home with a great atmosphere against a club who notoriously don't do well in this venue".
Manchester United face Liverpool at the back of their stunning UCL comeback win over Atalanta. Meanwhile, Liverpool is currently on form.
