Chelsea will welcome Southampton to Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup having defeated Aston Villa in the previous round through a penalty shootout after playing a 1-1 draw at full time. The blues have been in scintillating form this season across all competitions, with their recent victory coming against Norwich City at the weekend. Chelsea saw seven goals past the canaries with Mason Mount netting a hat-trick and the in-form Ben Chilwell also scoring in that fixture.
Southampton on the other end played out a 2-2 draw with Burnley at the weekend in what was a thrilling encounter as both teams wasted no time in canceling each other's lead within a few minutes. They seemed to be in good shape ahead of this meeting with Chelsea having lost the previous leg by 3-1 with Ward Prowse being shown a red card for a cynical tackle on Jorginho. Going into this fixture, there is a couple of team news and updates regarding this all-important game.
1. Saúl Ñíguez Possible Start
Saúl Ñíguez joined Chelsea on the deadline day of the summer transfer window from Athletico Madrid but has featured just once for the Blues outfit in the Premier League against Aston Villa in which he had a poor performance. However, ahead of this game, Thomas Tuchel will hope to rotate his squad to give some players minutes of which Saúl Ñíguez is one of the players likely to start. It will be great to see him march onto the pitch in the famous Blues jersey against the team.
2. Lukaku's Injury Update
Romelu Lukaku sustained an injury in the early minutes of their UEFA Champions League match against Malmo FF. He hobbled off the pitch with the aid of medical staff with the match eventually ending at 4-0. He was also absent from their 7-0 demolition of Norwich City at the weekend with the coach giving an update on the Belgium international. "We need more examinations to be more precise but they [Lukaku and Werner] will be out for some matches. I can say they are out for tomorrow [Norwich] and they will be out for the Southampton game and from there we see what's next." Thus, the Tall striker will be unavailable for this game.
Chelsea and Southampton will be meeting for the 109th time in all competitions, with the Blues winning 47 and Southampton on 31. The rest have ended in a draw. The match is billed for 8:00 PM West African Time. The player to watch out for in this London team is Mason Mount. Mason Mount has been in incredible form for the Blues side since his return from injury. Ward Prowse is the other player to watch for in the Southampton side.
