List Of Top Tennis Stars (Male & Female) Who Have Pulled Out Of The Tokyo Olympics

With the Tokyo Olympics set to hold in some days, and sports fans already hyped to see the action go down in various events-- Lawn Tennis might just be a bit different from what many would be looking out for.

A number of top tennis stars have pulled out of the Olympics due to one reason or the other. This is happening in both the male and female categories. Here's a compiled list of tennis stars who have withdrawn from the games and the reason behind their withdrawal.

Serena Williams

The Queen of the court pulled out of the games because of a number of decision which she kept to herself -- according to her press briefing. The Olympic gold medalist says she hasn't given her decision a thought and she isn't ready to, so she's staying away.

Roger Federer

The Swiss star picked up a knee injury and doesn't seem to be fit for the games, so he has chosen to focus on starting rehabilitation and resume competition on the Tour. 

Nick Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios has opted out as well, the tennis player is struggling with injury, making it impossible for him to compete at Tokyo 2020. He also went on further to state that the thought of playing to an empty crowd was not one that excites him. ( Due to covid-19, the games wouldn't be having the massive spectators inside the stadia)

Rafael Nadal

Former World No1, Raphael Nadal has pulled out of the Olympics, he says he wants to listen to his body, prioritising rest and recovery at the moment. He is hopeful he would be his best on the Tour later on, as he hopes to win another Grand Slam.

Simona Halep

The Romanian tennis star will not be participating at the Tokyo Olympics, she made this known via a tweet. Her calf injury is yet to heal, the injury forced her to miss the French Open and Wimbledon, and now the Olympics.

Sanislas Wawrinka

The former world No. 3 withdrew from the Games after undergoing his second left foot surgery of the year earlier this month. He has been battling with a knee injury earlier before now and has decided to focus on rehabilitation in the hopes of closing out a season on the Tour.

Dominic Thiem

Thiem announced the news to his fans via a statement on Twitter which read: “For me, like all athletes, taking part in the Olympics and representing my country is a huge honour and that makes this decision even tougher. However, 2021 did not start as expected and I don’t feel ready to play my best in Tokyo.”

Matteo Berrettini

The Wimbledon finalist has withdrawn from the Olympics due to a thigh injury he picked up in the final against Novak Djokovic. The Italian reached his first Grand Slam final, but was defeated in four sets to world No.1. He becomes the first high-profile player to pull out of the Olympics
