Manchester United signed Harry Maguire for £80m from Leicester City in 2019. Despite that fee, the 28-year-old English center-back does not have a suitable and trusted defensive partner at the club.
With the 28-year-old French defender's contract set to expire in 2022, rumors are that Real Madrid will sanction the sale for a total fee of £41m.
Aside from being a proven performer as a defender, here are three things Varane will add to the Manchester United team, both on and off-field:
1. Long Passing
Varane's greatest on-field strength is his passing, particularly long passes. Varane attempts an average of 61.87 passes every 90 minutes, with 14.89 of those usually more than 30 yards long.
With 12.30 (82.6%) of those long passes completed averagely and the wealth of pace wingers Manchester United has, one can only imagine how such a combination will impact the Red Devils' attack.
2. Experience & Leadership
Varane has been a first-team player since the age of 17 with RC Lens before joining Real Madrid in 2011. He has now amassed 363 senior appearances, with 17 goals and six assists.
Varane has played alongside legendary defenders like Pepe, Marcelo, and Sergio Ramos. All three being Real Madrid's captain at one time or the other.
With Man United's dressing room comprising many young footballers, Varane will add the much-needed experience and leadership in the dressing room.
3. Winning Mentality
The 2018 World Cup winner has won 19 trophies (including three consecutive UEFA Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup between 2016 and 2018).
The last time United won a trophy was in 2017. Varane will bring a massive winning mentality with him.
The center-back pairing of Maguire and Varane will be a joy to watch, we anticipate.
