Mason Mount is a very good player and he is one of the most important players for Chelsea. Thomas Tuchel recently stated that it is very difficult for him to drop the English midfielder and you cannot blame him for saying that.
However, there is something that I have noticed about Chelsea and Mason Mount since the beginning of September.
Mason Mount`s Role In The Chelsea Team.
Mason Mount plays as a forward for Chelsea. He and Kai Havertz play directly behind Romelu Lukaku and his role is to get balls to Lukaku and also try to create chances for the team. Mount has not really done well in that role this season.
Mason Mount is favored over other Chelsea attackers like Ziyech and Pulisic because of his work rate and his ability to track back and help the defense and midfield.
Chelsea Without Mason Mount.
Chelsea played against Aston Villa without Mason Mount and he was also absent in the second half of Chelsea’s clash with Tottenham on Sunday.
What I have noticed is that Mason Mount is always eager to create attacking plays and chances for Chelsea and for most times this season, he has been over-doing it. In situations where he just needed to play a quick pass, he often tries to complicate things.
When Chelsea are playing without Mason Mount, it is a very different case for Chelsea. There is quick passing in the attacking third and that allows Chelsea to stretch oppositions.
The likes of Kovacic, Azpilicueta, Marcos Alonso, contribute more to the attack, and that works more for Chelsea instead of them just looking to play through Mason Mount.
This doesn’t mean that Mason Mount is a bad player, it just means that he is unable to be more productive in attack for Chelsea at the moment.
Thomas Tuchel will be looking to improve him and help him be a better forward for the team, but for now, Chelsea seems to be more direct and straightforward without Mason Mount.
