After winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina, Lionel Messi is strongly seen as the next Ballon d'Or winner.
The Argentine has reached 60 goal contributions this season for club and country, and despite the fact he couldn't go past the Champions League round of 16, he's firmly in the running for his 8th Golden Ball award.
But then, judging from how the Ballon d'Or was awarded during the last World Cup year (2018), Messi do not deserve to win it this year.
4 years ago, a 19-year old Kylian Mbappé steered France to their 2nd WC triumph, scoring 4 goals in the process but ended up finishing 4th on the Ballon d'Or rankings.
Perhaps, part of the reason Mbappé was overlooked was because of his elimination at the round of 16 stage with PSG in the UCL.
So if Mbappé couldn't win the Ballon d'Or that year, why should Messi even be considered this time around despite exiting the UCL at the last 16 stage this season?
