Opinion: The ₦1 Million Price Given To Iwobi And Iheanacho May Not Be A Good Idea

Nigeria started their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers as they faced the Liberian national team in Lagos, Nigeria. Nigeria recorded their first win in the group, as two goals from Leicester City football club forward Kelechi Iheanacho secured all three points for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

After the match, Kelechi Iheanacho was named the Man of the Match and was given a ₦1 million price. Alex Iwobi was named the MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the match and was rewarded with the same amount. In my opinion, these prices given to the two players may not be a good idea, as they may bring in an unhealthy challenge in the squad where every player will like to score or shine more than their teammates, ignoring the basics of football, which is teamwork.

The match against Liberia was entertaining and a great way to start the World Cup qualification process for the Nigeria national team, as they top their group with 3 points ahead of Cape Verde and the Central African Republic, who drew their first game 1-1.

What are your thoughts? Do you think it was the right move to reward the MVP and Man of the Match with such a large amount of money? Don't you think this may make players selfish in the next game? Make your opinions heard in the comments section below.
