Opinion; 5 clubs Lionel Messi is most likely to join after leaving Barcelona

On Thursday, the 5th of August, an official statement from FC Barcelona announced that the club icon, Leonel Messi, will no longer be linked with the Catalan giants.

This came as a shock to football fans around the world as the 34-years-old was expected to sign a new contract with the blue and red outfits. It was reported that the deal between both parties fell through due to Barcelona's dire financial situation.

The question on every football fan lips right now is; "which club will Leonel Messi join next?".

According to Daily Mail - an American based footballing website - Manchester City and Paris Saint Germain lead the race on who may potentially sign the 34 years old.

Although, no statement has been released by either Leonel Messi or his representatives, this is an opinion article on the top 5 clubs Messi is most likely to join.

1. PSG

Leonel Messi has been linked to PSG for some time now. If a move is implemented, the Argentine will re-unite with his former teammates, Neymar Jr and Dani Alves.

2. Manchester City:

It is not a hidden fact the Manchester City's Manager, Pep Guardiola, wants to work with Leonel Messi again. The duo worked with each other at Barcelona where they won 2 champion's league title together.

3. Manchester United:

Manchester United is known to be a club who'd splash out excess money to get the player they want - except this time, Leonel Messi would be a free agent. With Messi's deal with Barcelona falling through due to financial issues regarding his salary, Manchester United is a club that may be able to handle Messi's salary requests.

4. Inter Milan:

With Romelu Lukaku on the verge of leaving Inter Milan to Chelsea, Messi will be a perfect replacement for him at the Nerazzurri. A move for Leonel Messi to Inter Milan will see him compete with the like of Cristiano Ronaldo in Series A.
